Recently, the rapid rise of emerging shipbuilding bases in Southeast Asia has led to a continuous increase in demand for marine steel plates and coils, reshaping the global trade landscape for related products. According to data from the International Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry, new ship orders in Southeast Asia increased by 37% year-on-year in 2023, accounting for 18.5% of the global total. Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia contributed the main increases, with Vietnam surpassing South Korea to become the world's second-largest shipbuilding nation in the first quarter of 2024, and its steel plate procurement increasing by 42% year-on-year. Currently, Southeast Asian shipbuilding companies mainly focus on low-to-mid-range bulk carriers and tankers, creating a large demand for medium-thickness and high-strength marine steel plates, which in turn drives demand for hot-rolled coils. In 2023, China's exports of marine steel plates to Southeast Asia reached US$5.6 billion, a year-on-year increase of 29%, accounting for 34% of global ship plate exports. As local steel production capacity in Southeast Asia gradually increases, companies such as Vietnam's Hoa Phat and Indonesia's Thanh Son are accelerating the development of marine steel plate production lines. It is projected that by 2026, the region's self-sufficiency rate for marine steel plates will increase from the current less than 30% to 55%, further altering the global supply chain landscape for marine steel coils and plates.
